George Mihailidis, aged 85, peacefully passed away on July 31,2025. Born on April 21, 1940, in the quaint village of Pentavryso, Kastoria, Greece. After he finished his service in the Hellenic army, at the age of 23, in 1963, he embarked on a journey to the United States via Munich, Germany and Toronto, Canada. He lived in Germany and Canada for 3 years before finally receiving his green card and joining his family in Indiana. He learned a skill in his native Greece creating fur garments. He started his furrier business and worked creating wonderful, amazing furs for everyone he knew and his clients until his retirement in 1999. He even enjoyed making fur coats for his nieces Barbie dolls.
In 1969, George visited Kastoria and met his wife, Alexandra of 56 years. Their union blossomed into a family of three, with the birth of their beloved son, Harry. Harry married Maria and George quickly considered her to be the daughter he never had. Harry and Maria blessed George with two beautiful granddaughters, Alexandra and Sofia. They gave him purpose and they were the love of his life. George was a devoted husband, father, Papou and cherished member of his community, alongside Alexandra, they cultivated a warm and welcoming home in Munster, where laughter and good food were abundant, and friendships flourished.
A man of unwavering integrity, George stood steadfast in his beliefs, advocating for causes close to his heart and serving as a pillar of support for his church and Greek-American community. His greatest passion in life was for soccer, especially the Greek National team and his beloved club, Olympiacos FC. He instilled in his son and grandchildren the values of hard work, loyalty, education and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. George’s quick wit, genuine warmth, and profound respect for others endeared him to all, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness.
George is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Alexandra; cherished son and devoted daughter in law, Harry and Maria Mihailidis; beloved grandchildren Alexandra and Sofia Mihailidis ; sister in law, Irene Mihailidis and her family; sister Susie Tsiamita (widow of the dearly departed Kalloudi) and her family in Greece; beloved sister in-laws and husbands, along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and Koumbari (close family friends) in the United States and Greece. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 4th, 2025, directly at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Schererville, beginning at 10:00 A.M. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery.
