Djuro “George” Vekich

Djuro “George” Vekich, November 24th, 1937 – April 9, 2024, age 86, of Munster, IN (formerly of Highland) died peacefully surrounded by family on April 9th. He was one of five children born in Bjelaj, Bosna (formerly Yugoslavia) to Pero and Mika Vekic. He is survived by his devoted wife, Velka (Samardzija), of 54 years; beloved daughter Mirjana (Dr. Daniel) Vukas, cherished grandchildren Vladimir and Ivana of Western Springs, IL, brother Rajko, sister Mara and many nieces, nephews and Kumovi in the US, Serbia, Bosna and Macedonia. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Jovo and sister Desa.

Djuro emigrated to the United States seeking a better life for himself. In 1970, he married Velka and together they had a daughter Mirjana, whom he showered with unconditional love.  His greatest joy came from his two grandchildren Vladimir and Ivana whom he adored the most and was affectionately known as Djedo.

Djuro retired from Inland Steel after 32 years. He found joy in tinkering in the garage, going to flea markets and listening to Serbian music. He was a member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Schererville, IN. He will truly be missed.

Funeral Services will be held Monday April 15th at 9:45 am at St George Serbian Orthodox Church in Schererville with the V. Rev. Radovan Jakovljevic officiating. Family and friends are invited to visit the family at 8:45 am until the time of service. At rest, Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville.
