John Konstantino Mantis (89) of Crown Point (formerly of St. John, IN) passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. John was born on March 17, 1934 in Achladokombos, Argos, Greece. He is survived by his children, Dr. Dino Mantis (Kristina), Nick (Julie) Mantis, and Dora Mantis (Erik Watland) and his treasured grandchildren, all of whom he loved more than life itself; Jon, Theodore, Marianna, Alexander, Eleni and Olivia. Also, many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, Koumbari and some of the most amazing friends ever.
John is preceded in death by his love-of-a-lifetime wife of 64 spiritual years, Maria, parents Konstantino and Theodora Mantis, his brother George Kokalis and his sister Kostoula Antonopoulou and daughter-in-law Dr. Tina Mantis.
He came to the United States from Achladokombos, Argos, Greece in 1956 and met the love his life, his dear Maria. He continued to embrace the Greek Orthodox culture and became a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Schererville, IN in 1956 and continued to attend services ever since.
John’s entrepreneurial spirit kept him busy over the years while he owned and operated several coffee shops and Marciano’s Pizza in Northwest Indiana. He also worked at Inland Steel for a period of time and also painted bridges for over 20 years.
John’s passions were cooking and traveling, especially visiting his beloved hometown, Achladokombos, Greece as often as he could over the years. He enjoyed winding down his days by watching his favorite TV programs; Jeopardy, WWE, Wheel of Fortune, Pawn Stars, Shark Tank and the Food Network.
Most of all and most important of all, John enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, other family and many, many friends who he loved with all his heart. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He always had a smile on his face and a joke to brighten everyone’s day.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 17, 2023 from 4 pm until 8 pm at the Lincoln Ridge Funeral Home (7607 W Lincoln Hwy, Crown Point, IN) with a Trisagion service being held. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St George Greek Orthodox Church (528 W 77th Ave, Schererville, IN). Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Cemetery in
Schererville, IN.
