Vaso “Wally” Popovich

HEBRON, IN – Vasilije (Vaso) Popovich, age 71, of Hebron, passed away at his home surrounded by family and loved ones on Sunday, October 28, 2018. Vaso was a loving husband of 45 years to his beloved wife, Milka Popovich (nee Andjelich), the father of two sons, Philip (Sheila) Popovich and Stephen (Katie) Popovich, grandfather to four wonderful grandchildren: Elise, Brendan, Dylan, and Sarah. Vaso was preceded in death by his father, Djuro Popovich, mother, Maria Popovich, sister Milica, and brothers Petar and Philip. Vaso is survived by his brother Boris Popovich and family, aunt Draga Milich and family, mother-in-law Jeannine Andjelich and family, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews, Kumovi, family, and friends throughout the United States and Canada. Vaso was a machinist by trade, a dedicated member of St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, where he served on the church executive board, member of the Merrillville Chapter Movement of Serbian Chetniks Ravne Gore, and loved dedicating his time to his family and home. Vaso immigrated to the United States in 1970 from Biskupia, the former Yugoslavia with the help of his brother and dear aunt. Vaso proudly established himself in his new country and influenced everyone in his community with his genuine love, kindness, and creativity. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Fire. Vaso was often found in his workshop tinkering on different projects for his friends and family, tending to his bees, and traveling with his wife. Vaso was a unique, kind, loving person who impacted everyone he met and will be dearly missed. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. directly at St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, Merrillville with V. Rev. Aleksandar Novakovic officiating. At rest at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Friends are invited to visit with Vaso’s family on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the LINCOLN RIDGE FUNERAL HOME, 7607 W. Lincoln Hwy., Schererville (Rte. 30 east of Cline Ave.) Pomen Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Cathedral.
