Stamata Doukas

Stamata Doukas, age 88, of Lowell, Indiana, formerly of Munster, passed awayon October 19, 2025, at her residence. Born on January 3, 1937 in Vlaherna, Greece to George and Eleni Kounelis, Stamata’s journey led her to the United States in 1957 to pursue a life filled with opportunity and promise. She first settled in Indiana Harbor, where she embraced a new culture and worked tirelessly to build a life for herself and her family.

In Greece, Stamata grew up with a love of cooking and food. These roots stayed with her throughout her life, as she often spoke of food from back home. She married Christos Doukas on May 5, 1960, and together they raised two (2) children, George and Pete, who survive her.  She owned and worked for Calvin’s Drive Inn before owning and working at Zorba’s Restaurant, where she was known for, not only, her cooking, but her generous spirit to those less fortunate.  Stamata was a proud American citizen, but never forgot her home country, often combining the best traditions of both worlds.

A devout member of the Greek Orthodox Church, Stamata was an active member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church.

Stamata is survived by her sons George (Kristine) and Pete (Tiffany) and her grandchildren Christos, Dimitri, Elanie, and Sophia, and by her brother Pete (Helen) Kounelis and her sister Irene (the late Aristotelis) Panousis.
Stamata was preceded in death by her husband, Christos earlier this year, and by her parents.

Visitation will be held at St. George Hellenic Church, 528 West 77th Avenue, Schererville, Indiana on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with the funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. Stamata will be laid to rest at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Crown Point, Indiana.
